Chemical reactions build our world.
Attraction, connection, distraction and memories
continuously shape our experience.
Within this continuous cyclic practice, form and
rhythm create recognizable patterns
which allow for world to become a subject:

our –self – near - future.

The score of Att-/Distraction was built from four graphs of electronegativity, the atomic radius, electron affinity and the ionization energy of the chemical elements grouped by the atomic number. The graphs show characteristics of the elements regarding their reactivity which vaguely describes the ability of an element to build atomic bonds.
In consequence of the strict graph patterns the piece is arranged as an arc rondo.

From the center percussive couplet the instrument grouping of the following couplets develops and varies. The rondo disintegrates catalytically as its elements bond and merge towards a dense soundscape.

The ritornello was rerecorded from five different speaker
positions creating a spatial memory as the recordings are added to the repetitions.

After the center couplet this
instrumentation is layered and altered.

Att-/Distraction was produced for the 1st Totem Electroacoustic Competition in 2022 which required the work not to exceed 15 Minutes. The 2023 Version develops from the 1st recording which was longer and allowed more space for the spheres to glide.

The work was made from sounds that were originally generated by the instruments of Productions Totem Contemporain, Montreal. The starting point of the “Totem” sound is
the sound generators invented by Jean-François Laporte, a variety of musical instruments often created from unusual or commonly used objects. It was a pleasure working with them.
